Последние десятилетия отмечены возрастающим интересом исследователей к широкому кругу заболеваний, в основе прогрессирования которых лежат механизмы сосудистого повреждения. Он включает в себя атеросклероз, гипертоническую болезнь, сахарный диабет, системные васкулиты. В конце XX в. в этот круг вошел описанный G.R.V. Hughes антифосфолипидный синдром (АФС) - симптомокомплекс, проявляющийся венозными и/или артериальными тромбозами, привычным невынашиванием беременности и тромбоцитопенией, которые сочетаются с гиперпродукцией антител к фосфолипидам (АФЛ) [50, 54, 55]. По современным представлениям последние обуславливают развитие гиперкоагуляционного состояния свертывающей системы крови (аутоиммунной тромбофилии), реализующегося тромбообразованием в сосудах как крупного, так и малого калибра, что может приводить к развитию полиорганной ишемии, а иногда и полиорганной недостаточности
