Elena Zakharova

Elena Zakharova - Candidate of Medical Sciences, Head of Nephrology Department, Senior Researcher, Botkin Hospital; Distinguished Physician of Moscow city;  Excellent Healthcare Professional; Associate Professor, Department of Nephrology and Hemodialysis, Russian Medical Academy of Continuing Professional Education; Associate Professor, Department of Nephrology, Russian University of Health.

Dr Zakharova is one of the recognized nephrologists in our country, her career as a nephrologist began in 1981, and in 1992 she was appointed as a Head of Nephrology of Moscow Botkin Hospital, keeping this position until nowadays. Beyond clinical practice she is educator, translator, researcher, and community leader, teaching nephrology, translating and editing translations of multiple International Guidelines and WKD Editorials, she also authored and co-authored more than two hundreds of papers and she is a member of the National Guidelines Work Group. Since 2012 Elena Zakharova was a Vice-president of the Russian Dialysis Society and in 2019 became the RDS President.

Her long-term collaboration with the International Nephrology Organizations started in 2007, and since that time, she served as the ISN NIS & Russia Regional Board Chair, the ISN Council and Executive Committee member, the ISN Educational Ambassador Program Committee Chair, and several ISN Work Groups member. She was World Kidney Day Steering Committee member; KDIGO Executive Committee member and KDIGO Controversies Conferences on Onconephrology and on Women and Kidney Health Work Group member. She also was ERA-EDTA CME Committee member, EULAR/ERA-EDTA Work Group on Recommendations for the Management of Adult and Paediatric Lupus Nephritis member, Treat-to-target in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus International Task Force member, and International Task Force on Definitions of Remission in SLE (DORIS) member. In 2025, Elena Zakharova became ERA Distinguished Fellow.

Elena Zakharova is a member of Editorial board of Kidney International, Journal of Nephrology, Journal of Onco-Nephrology, and Kidney and Dialysis. Since 2006, she had been unwavering deputy-editor of the Nephrology and Dialysis journal, and elected as Nephrology and Dialysis editor-in-chief in July 2025.
